A working USB port and a working printer can't communicate if the component that connects them doesn't function properly. Bad cables can cause a long list of problems and simulate other sources of trouble. Just as you used a known-working device to test out your USB ports, reach for a cable -- from your own or a co-worker's system -- that's fully functional where it's deployed, and substitute it for the cable you're trying to use with your printer. If your peripheral communicates with your computer once you substitute a different cable, you've isolated your problem.
